UNLV becomes first institution in Nevada State

to receive CNSS national certificate

The UNLV School of Informatics has received the National Certificate for Cybersecurity Courseware from the NSA in March 2007 on behalf of UNLV. This certificate is in recognition that UNLV’s curriculum satisfies the CNSS (Committee on National Security Systems) national training standards for Information Security established by the US National Security Agency. The official certificate was awarded June 5, 2007 in Boston at the CNSS IACE (Information Assurance Courseware Evaluation) conference.

Recognizing the importance of Information Assurance (IA) education, a large number of US institutions have been developing the curriculum on information security. However, only 140 institutions from 42 states have received the CNSS certificates so far. UNLV has now become the first university in Nevada to receive the certificate.

Profs. Hal Berghel and Ju-Yeon Jo at UNLV’s School of Informatics have been developing the curriculum on Cybersecurity and worked on the courseware certification on behalf of UNLV. Dr. Eric Sandgren, Dean of Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering, has been aware of emerging demands in Information Security area and has supported generating multidisciplinary educational program in information security.

The certificate of NSTISSI 4011 Information Systems Security (INFOSEC) Professionals is for the course for the training of information systems security (INFOSEC) professionals in the disciplines of telecommunications security and automated information systems (AIS) security.

The certificate of CNSS 4012 Senior Systems Managers is for the course for the development and implementation of Information Assurance (IA) training for Senior Systems Managers (SSMs) of national security systems.
